Augmented Reality Ignites The Fine Arts

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

Like wildfire, Augmented Reality is spreading rapidly across everything from iPhone apps to the new augmented-reality mapping technology from Microsoft.  But it’s also igniting the world of fine art.

In 2007 and 2008,

Pablo Valbuena displayed an augmented reality project series that explored the temporary quality of space-time, not just as as a three dimensional environment, but as space in transformation.  He does this by using two interdependent layers to create an augmented space.  The first layer is the physical volume of an object that serves as the foundation for the next layer.  The second layer is a virtual projection that is a controlled sequential transformation of space-time.  Physical Geometry + Virtual Layer = Augmented Space:

In 2009,

inspired by Pablo Valbuena’s artwork, artist Scott Blake created an homage to Andy Warhol using bar codes and a Campbell’s Soup can video interface.

In 2010,

design agencies Grosse8 and Lichtfront are blowing people’s minds with their installation “Augmented Sculpture”.  The installation is a 2,5m tall wooden sculpture.  The sculpture is the base layer that serves as the screen for a 360° projection of virtual content.   The projection is accompanied with music by Jon Hopkins.

I can’t wait to see what artists continue to come up with…
